This guide is written for students who are following GCE Advanced level (A2) syllabuses in English Language. This resource may also be of general interest to language students on university degree courses, trainee teachers and anyone with a general interest in language science. This guide is specifically written to support students preparing for the Investigating Language module of the AQA (syllabuses A and B), but should be helpful to those doing comparable tasks on other syllabuses (such as Edexcel's Spoken or Written Study and OCR's Language Research). What the (AQA) exam board says

The aim of this module is to encourage candidates to apply their knowledge of conceptual frameworks gained in Module 1 and Module 2 to a small research project in a chosen aspect of spoken or written English in use.

Assessment Objectives

This module requires candidates to

  • AO1 communicate clearly the knowledge, understanding and insight appropriate to the study of language, using appropriate terminology and accurate and coherent written expression (2½%)
  • AO2 demonstrate expertise and accuracy in writing for specific purposes and audiences, drawing on knowledge of linguistic features to explain and comment on choices made (2½%)
  • AO3ii understand, discuss and explore concepts and issues relating to language in use (2½%)
  • AO4 apply and explore frameworks for the systematic study of language at different levels, commenting on the usefulness of the approaches taken (5%)
  • AO5ii analyse and evaluate variation in the meanings and forms of spoken and/or written language from different times according to context (2½%).

Content

Candidates' own choices of topics and data are recognised as valuable aspects of learning, but their choices must be manageable and assessable. The following are examples of the types of investigation which candidates might choose to submit.

  • An analytical study of some differences between spoken and written English.
  • A study of transcribed examples of a regional variety of spoken English.
  • A study of examples of the English spelling system.
  • Observations of the speech (or writing) of individuals in the process of language development.
  • A study of norms and variations in everyday uses of English.
  • A transcription (with commentary) of a stretch of everyday discourse.
  • A description of some characteristics of the written and/or spoken English of a distinct occupational, professional or other social group.
  • An exploration of stylistic features of popular media.
  • An analysis and comparison of contrasted texts.
  • A study of language choices made by bi-lingual or multi-lingual individuals in the community.
  • An exploration of some features of a particular language in use in the community, compared with English.
  • An analysis of a particular area of semantics in English.

Candidates will choose their own topic for investigation in consultation with their teachers. In preparation for this module, they will have studied how to

  • establish an appropriate context for investigation collect data or select texts for investigation, in a principled and sensitive way
  • identify significant linguistic features in data or texts
  • record observations and describe data accurately
  • transcribe and annotate spoken English, as appropriate
  • apply a knowledge of systematic frameworks to data/texts in a sustained, reflective and practical way
  • apply and evaluate different approaches and methodologies for the study of language
  • draw conclusions to show an awareness of both the limitations and value of investigations into data
  • organise material coherently and use an appropriate style of writing
  • present findings in an accessible format, ensuring accuracy and relevance
  • use standard conventions of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Mode of Assessment

Assessment will be by the production of a written investigation. The work will be assessed by the candidate's teacher and these assessments will be moderated by the Board. The length of the investigation should be between 2000 and 4000 words, excluding data and appendices.

It is expected that candidates following a two-year course would spend approximately 30 hours of study time on this module. This would normally include time for class contact, individual contact, private study, research, drafting and redrafting. It is recognized, however, that the amount of study time available to candidates will vary from one centre to another.


Getting started

In a sense, any investigation has two kinds of subject. The first is the data or text(s) to be studied. These may be written or spoken (in which case, you will need transcripts). The second kind of subject is the theoretical linguistic approach to the text. As you should now know, any text may be studied in terms (among other things) of “phonology, lexis, grammar, semantics, pragmatics and discourse”. Your theoretical method will usually fall under one (perhaps more) of these (or other) broad headings.

To show this, your investigation should have a title that includes both elements, the theoretical method usually coming first, e.g.: Operation of the metaphor in political speech writing or Lexical change in girls' comics 1970 to 1998. Titles should be simply indicative of content - don't go for snappy, cryptic or clever titles.

The whole course requires you to develop understanding of language theory. In the language investigation, you will apply what you have learned. While your teacher should introduce you to essential areas of theoretical knowledge, you should work independently, using your course textbooks and other authorities to gain a more thorough understanding of language theory in doing this work.

Choosing a suitable task

Many students start with an idea of the texts they wish to study, but with no sense of an approach to investigation. Often these are texts you know (or think you do) already. One reason to study language is to learn about different kinds of text - so do you really want to spend time investigating rap lyrics? If so, you need to think of something worth trying to find out in your investigation.

Work to your own strengths - if you are skilful in analysing, say, clause structures, then it makes sense to choose an investigation that allows you to do this. But it's not a good idea if you barely understand how these structures work.

Whatever you do, you should work in an objective and scientific way - such that other people could repeat your investigation (to see whether their findings support yours or not). Avoid vague and general statements. If possible, examine objective data, which can be illustrated by statistics or charts.

Rather than think of a task and then try to justify it, you should work the other way round. Here is an area of language use about which I really want to know more (e.g. changes in the lexicon in a given time period or attitudes to gender). I can then devise an investigation that uses appropriate data to give objective evidence that may in turn allow some broad interpretation and conclusion - e.g. frequency of usage of gender-neutral pronouns may reflect greater awareness that the pronoun should be inclusive, or, weakly, that the writer is aware that a masculine form (for both sexes or either) may give offence.

Although conclusions may include some subjective or relative comment, this should be plausible - that is, inferred from objective data, as in the example above. Your investigation must at some point contain objective explanation.

For example, you should not attempt to measure the frequency in a text of “hard ”or “long” words - as these descriptions have no objective value. You may, on the other hand, analyse a text against a given language corpus - incidence of occurrence of words among the 1,000 or 3,000 (or whatever) most commonly written (or spoken) according to a given corpus. Are all texts of equal value?

Exam boards publish guidance for examiners and teachers about what candidates need to do, to be awarded certain grades. In theory you can achieve these, by studying any text. But with some it is harder than with others. If you want to investigate discourse structure or stylistics, then you may find a script or literary text (anything from a TV advert to a poem) is more appropriate than unrehearsed conversation, say. Of course, in any language data, there is a lot going on - but it can be a lot harder to find in spontaneous utterances, than in speech or writing which is (explicitly) planned, drafted or edited.

One student, recently, began to study Christmas cards. A very able linguist might investigate grammatical structures or stylistic features of the short texts that appear on these. But this is more or less a cul-de-sac for an investigation in which any candidate hopes to produce his or her best work.

Spoken or written data?

If you wish to study spoken data, then you must be ready for a lot of extra work - in producing transcripts. And this work does nothing to raise your mark for the investigation - it's the equivalent of arriving at a room to take an examination - you still have to go in and do the business. For some tasks (such as investigating stylistic features of public speech), it's fine to take transcripts that are already available to you (for example, transcripts of political speech in Hansard or on the White House Web site).

Of course, even with written data, you may need to produce selections, which you have marked in some way, for purposes of analysis. If you know that you do not wish to spend a lot of time in gathering the data, then stick with print or written texts. If time is short, then you cannot afford to gather spoken data - you will almost certainly run into time trouble. Collecting print sources is easy - there are plenty that come through your letterbox every week, while others are lying about everywhere.

Keeping to the subject

This is very hard to do. It is easy to stray from an exploration of language features into responding to the meaning of a text - and before you know it, you are doing sociology, literary criticism or journalism. It's fine to analyse the use of metaphor to establish character. It is NOT fine to describe or comment on the character thus established. It is fine to compare (statistically) Roald Dahl's and Enid Blyton's use of qualifiers; it is not fine to say that, if Dahl qualifies nouns and noun phrases more frequently than Blyton, then he is a better writer.

At a more basic level, try not to write about the pictures (if there are any), which accompany a text, or its general context. There is something to be said about typography, but unless you are very well informed on the subject, then it may give you difficulty.

The “so what?” factor

A zoologist could, in a daft moment, decide to investigate the number of eyes found in domestic cats. Ultimately, this might lead to a “theory” to explain those instances where the cat had fewer than two. More sensibly, he or she could investigate different markings on the cat. We would be impressed by a scientist who disproved or even seriously questioned what we always thought was obvious. But we would not be impressed by one who appeared to confirm what we already thought we knew.

A common example comes with students who wish to study child language acquisition. It is now more or less certainly established that, while individuals learn at different rates (some are precocious and others late), most learn according to the same schedule. And where they don't, there is a good reason for it - such as a parent who has a speech disability or is not a native speaker of the language the child is learning. So there's not a lot of point in “investigating” data from the same child, over time, and concluding that he or she has "developed", unless there was some reason to expect this not to happen. On the other hand, there might well be a point in a more thorough study of a child's lexicon - such as investigating the relation between what is used and what is understood, or the frequency with which abstract nouns occur as a proportion of all nouns. (Are children more likely, for example, to use an abstraction in speech than in writing? And does this probability change over time?)

Before you commit yourself to an investigation, check (with your teacher, your fellow students, and the most sceptical of your friends or relations) whether it really is worth doing. Another good test is to ask if it will lead to anything you can use in an exam. Given that you may be examined on, say, language and occupation or language change, then the investigation is a good opportunity to gather useful data, and analyse these - and you can recycle much of this for use later.

A good example is the alleged (in fact, well established) differences in language use by men and women. We think we know that women use more grooming talk or have a more precise colour lexicon. But what light can language use throw on the belief that men are from Mars and women are from Venus? Can we devise an investigation that will yield some objective information about this? If so, it seems worth doing, because it helps provide answers to real questions which people repeatedly ask. (Devising a clear investigation here is in fact quite hard, given that any gender difference is likely to be obscured by a huge amount that both sexes have in common.)

Get out more

Sometimes you (students) tell us (teachers) that you want to study language from a source close to home - perhaps using some written data from your family, or by making a record of a family member at work. This is allowed, and might seem like a good idea as you look for things to study.

But a school or even university language course allows you to cover only a tiny selection of all the possible sources of language data in the world. It seems a shame if you use any of this time looking at things which are wholly familiar, when there is a universe waiting to be explored. If you think you do have texts worth studying, then show them to your teacher, who can share them with your fellow students.

More to the point, of all the data you can use, it is quite hard to find samples or specimens which are comprehensive enough or with enough in common to support your investigation - you may briefly look at many, before you settle on those which are best suited to research and analysis.

It certainly sensible to use what you know of the occupations and interests of family members (or your own) as a source of examples in many areas of language study (such as language and social contexts). But it does not follow, because your mum or dad is a doctor, lawyer or astronaut, that you should automatically want to study “medical”, “legal” or “astrophysical” language. Your parents have done nothing to deserve such scrutiny!

Etiquette and research ethics

Many kinds of investigation will take you into activities which could seem intrusive, and it is important to respect other people, rather than see them as only a source of data. You cannot expect to be present in situations which are of serious importance to real people, calmly collecting what they say. And you cannot always use language data you have collected, as it may be confidential, so that showing it to other people is inappropriate.

Given the vast range of possible data for study, it should be possible to find something that is not confidential or sensitive.

Do let people know what use you will, and will not, make of any data. For an example of how to do this, see the Permission Form below. For instance, you should remove anything in the data which might identify any individual exactly - this includes children, who might later in life be affected by your use of data from them, and who have individual rights which you should respect now. It's not acceptable to assume that you can take liberties because you know the person from whom you have acquired language data.

You should not record people's speaking (other than, perhaps, broadcast speech) without their permission. You may be given permission to record, without telling them when you are and when you are not doing so. How far they know you recording them, recorded them or in future will all affect the data you collect in such a situation. For some investigations, this may so affect the data as to make it worthless. Other kinds of investigation may be unaffected.

The comment below is a response to a message, on an electronic mailing list for teachers, asking for advice to give a student who was thinking of studying language in a “medical” context, which might include doctor-patient interactions.

He needs to consider he would get his father (a doctor) and these strange things who are really people (but who are de-humanised by being labelled “patients”) to allow him to tape conversations.

He could not record transcripts without a patient's permission - and wouldn't it affect the findings anyway, if a patient knew he or she was being recorded?

The inter-school assessors would take that into account, of course, but even so, I am thinking of a student at our school who wanted to study the police and their language with known criminals - but who found that the person being interviewed was so artificial (knowing he was being interviewed for a study and determined not to admit anything) and the police officer was so “wooden” (determined to be seen to being fair) that it was so useless that the student had to drop the topic...After all, no actual criminal is going to admit a crime just to satisfy a language student and no interviewing person is going to act in any way other than prescribed! The same goes for doctors and patients.

Students have to learn that they live in the real world sooner or later and sometimes what is a means to a grade to them is (perhaps literally in this case) a matter of life and/or death to other people...

As a disabled person myself - even if I am a teacher with an interest in helping students - I would sue a doctor who recorded me without permission. I would certainly NOT allow my real life as somewhat unfortunately depicted through my health to be a subject of an A level investigation when there are so many other topics out there your student could select.

Comparative tasks - a warning

Don't put the cart before the horse. Any comparison should arise out of a genuine language issue. It should be one where there is only one significant variable.

For example, comparing a text in the King James Bible (early 17th century) with the equivalent passage in the Revised Standard Version (mid 20th century), or with other versions, is an appropriate (and much-used) exercise in showing language change. (Though even here, other variables emerge as the translators bring in ideas from their own time, culture or religious understanding.)

By contrast, comparing reports on the same event in a “tabloid” and in a “broadsheet” newspaper is of little value to a student of language. Why?

  • First and are, objectively, descriptions only of the paper size (note, for eaxmple, that the newspaper has a tabloid section - its content is not intentionally or generally less challenging to the readers than the content of the broadsheet it accompanies).
  • Second, the writers are not the same - this introduces a vast range of variables into the alleged comparison.
  • Third, we lack essential information (pragmatics and context) - did each writer work to a word count? How far did each writer's work get sub-edited? How much time did each have? Was the report done on the spot or worked up from an agency report? And so on.
  • But more to the point, what area of language study were we investigating anyway? Popular notions of in the broadsheet, insofar as they make sense at all, are value judgements about the truth or balance or thoroughness or whatever of the (that is the informative content of the report) - which is not your subject at all (whereas it may be the subject of an investigation in media studies or sociology).

To find, in such texts, significant differences in objective language use (e.g. statistical analysis of clause structures) is likely to be too taxing for even the most gifted of students. The notion of as in is strictly meaningless as a description of measurable language features.


Presenting your investigation

Ideally, this should be word-processed. This is not yet compulsory for all UK exam boards, but you will have to use computer software at university and in your job. Why not start now?

This should contain essential information - your name, candidate number (when you know it), exam centre number, syllabus, component, date of completion and so on:

Body text

The body text should be in a Times Roman font (if available) and justified or left aligned. Try not to split paragraphs over a page (). Use double or 1.5 line spacing. It may be helpful to write an (outline or synopsis) of your investigation as your first paragraph. Conventionally this is marked off from what follows by smaller type size and/or indentation.

If you quote an authority (ideally you will) you should use superscript numbers () to show this, and give the full reference at the end:

You are also expected to give a full , to show texts studied directly, and those (academic works, probably) used to inform your explication of the texts studied.

Texts can be transcribed where features of graphology, typography etc. are not important (this will depend on what you are looking at). Spoken texts should be transcribed, observing conventions for this - the amount of information shown will depend upon the theoretical focus of your investigation.

Original material should be photocopied (or scanned) and presented on separate pages or in an appendix. If the language data are found in, say, a child's exercise book, you may wish to include this in the folder of your work for the examiner. Similarly, you may need to submit original audio or video tapes, where this supports understanding of spoken language data.

Use your software to give a . You may exclude your title page and any appendixes, but must state this. You include quotations in the count. Not sure how to do it? Use your word-processing program's , and don't be so lazy!

Examples of investigations

A model investigation

In one sense it may not be helpful to show you model or exemplary investigations, as you cannot copy them, and you may be dismayed by your sense of what is required. On the other hand, it helps to know what a good one looks like.

The example here comes from a student whose subject is not especially difficult - perhaps most students taking an A2 exam could attempt it in some form. But it is very thorough and meticulous, and was awarded a very high mark. (Teachers are able to award full marks to work of the very highest standard - UK exam boards do not disallow this.)

Teacher assessment of this investigation

For this examination teachers were not allowed to write comments directly onto students' work. The remarks below were included with the investigation, as submitted to the inter-school moderator - who confirmed the school's assessment of this investigation.

The primary data chosen for this investigation form an exemplary substantial, coherent and manageable sample. They are suitable for the nature of the study.

The task undertaken is appropriate. The candidate's method is transparent and sound, while transcription of data is excellent, as is presentation of the original video and audio recordings.

The analysis of the data is thorough and objective. The candidate applies appropriate theoretical models from authoritative sources, and interprets the data exhaustively. His analysis is mostly elegant, always clear and coherent. Organization is very impressive.

The conclusions at which the candidate arrives are mostly clear, persuasive and significant. The study has led to interesting results.

This study is exemplary in both respects.

referencing, bibliography and appendices: The candidate observes these well. Appendices are especially interesting, especially the graphs on colour-adding, and the marked transcripts. The bibliography is appropriate, and the references helpful.

This candidate provides a good example for others. The work is understated, but assured: it moves clearly from rigorous interpretation to modest but compelling conclusions. The style is lucid, and scholarly without jargon or persiflage. Without being at the extreme end of the scale, the investigation matches the descriptors for this band very closely.

Outlines of investigations

The examples below are outlines of tasks that were undertaken by students for the 2000 exam. In each case the student achieved a mark for the investigation in line with, or better than, the mark for other papers. You are welcome to adapt these tasks for future use. In each case there is some explicit general guidance, although the students received close personal supervision of their work.

Student A

This investigation considers structural features of spoken English. The data are two broadcast commentaries (Radio 5 Live and Mach 1 for ITV). These are analysed in terms of:

  • lexical choice,
  • semantics,
  • syntax and
  • structures of short discourses.

The investigator will look for special or restricted language uses and for evidence of differences that may arise from absence/presence of images. Appendices: Details of speakers and context; transcripts of spoken extracts, using appropriate conventions to show pauses - do not supply punctuation as for written data; acknowledgements.

Student B

This investigation considers lexis, semantics and discourse structure, stylistic rhetorical devices and typography, if relevant.

you may need to look for a theoretical model or description of political advertising, against which to evaluate your data. You may find something in Crystal's encyclopedias, but very up-to-date stuff is harder to find. You really need guidelines from the parties themselves. For help in doing so, try writing to (names of local MPs). This should give you a starting point. You must also look for evidence of purpose - does the leaflet try to alter your party allegiance, or simply get already committed voters out to cast their vote? Evidence will be found in use of imperative (command forms).

Language features to look for

  • Lexis - look for distinctive lexicon, such as terms peculiar to political context (if any). Compare incidence (frequency) in different leaflets. Look at frequency of use of party's name and of other party names.
  • Collocations - look at distinctive forms such as “New Labour”.
  • Semantics - look at special meanings for political/electoral context. How are these used to support the leaflets' purposes?
  • Stylistics - look at things that you can quantify as well as explain (e.g. incidence of metaphor, type of metaphor, colloquialism etc.)
  • Syntax - look at use of phrases and clauses outside complete sentences; look at use of different sentence types - declarative, interrogative, imperative and so on.

how far does each leaflet fulfil purposes or intentions identified in your introduction? Are they effective means of persuasion or used simply because canvassers expect to use them?

Student C

This investigation will look at a very few passages in a range of translations. These will be studied for examples of lexical and semantic change, for changes in syntax patterns and stylistic features (e.g. cultural or gender bias or neutrality in metaphor, pronouns, titles and so on).

The King James Version of the Bible was translated as a Bible for public worship, and for reading aloud. Subsequent revisions have been made within this tradition, using the KJ text where possible, but altering it where language change requires this. These are the Revised Version, Revised Standard Version and New Revised Standard Version. In this investigation, taking the KJV as the standard or reference point, you will study changes to the text, organizing these by appropriate language categories.

To make the task manageable, you will study a relatively short sample of the text (initially the last two chapters of Acts, but this may be reduced). This book has been chosen as (according to the translators) St. Luke has better command of Greek than other New Testament writers. The chosen sections do not contain abstruse theological terms (such as grace), which may lead to widely differing translations (although there are some nautical terms not found elsewhere in scripture). For reference, you will look at other contemporary translations (e.g. J.B. Phillips, NEB, Good News) that have other intended purposes and audiences (private devotional use, readers in the UK etc.) to see how translation differs.

At all times, you should be aware that you are studying translations made for in .

Headings under which you should organize your comment will be

  • Lexical change - nouns, proper nouns, pronouns (esp. 2nd person forms) verbs, conjunctions and prepositions
  • Verb forms, especially tenses to indicate sequence and chronology (important when read aloud)
  • Semantic change - explain lexical substitutions; use of archaic and literary forms in revised Version
  • Syntax - phrase and clause structure; use of relative and subordinate clauses
  • Discourse structure and typography - use of verses/numbers, paragraphs, columns, typeface and size, maps and so on

Student D

(Note - this investigation was chosen by a very able student, much to his teacher's alarm. The task would not be suitable for many candidates.)

Beginning with compounds of the F-word the investigator will look at the morphology of new and variant forms, studying these in context, with regard to pragmatics, metaphor and implication.

You need some theoretical model here. Clearly there are multiple derivatives and compounds of the F-word, as well as grammatical conversion (use in word class other than verb). You may wish to consider how these developments are not only evidence of change, but signal gradual shift in social implication - a lessening over recent time of taboo value. This can be “measured” (loosely) by reference to wider publication in mainstream spoken and written media.

Look at

  • Inflection of verb to produce “F-er”, “F-ing” and so on
  • Derivation (morphology) using “F-word” as root, prefix and suffix
  • Compounding of “F-word”
  • Conversion - use of “F-word” as noun or attributive adjective, and so on
  • Semantic shift or widening - less restricted or precise meaning (e.g. vague pejorative rather than denoting sexual congress)
  • Contexts of use and publication - broadcast spoken and print contexts.

is the F-word becoming less of a taboo? Give reasons for your view.

what language data have you used? How can you ensure that these are used objectively? You may need, for example, to use Word to produce document statistics on a range of texts - total word count and frequency of use of F-word (use other taboo words as reference?)

  • Language data with acknowledgements of copyright-protected sources
  • entries in contemporary dictionary to indicate earliest recorded usage (to check for degree of invention or borrowing)
  • statistical information in tables or graphs.

Examples of teacher assessment

These are the assessments really given for three of the students whose work appears above. This kind of assessment is not required by exam boards, but can help inter-school assessors agree with, and support, the assessments made by teachers in the exam centre.

Student B

The primary data chosen for this investigation form a coherent and manageable sample. The task undertaken is appropriate - it is challenging but not exceptional. The candidate's method is sound, and presentation of the investigation, data and appendices is exemplary.

The analysis of the data is thorough and meticulous. The candidate gradually accumulates observations about the data, then makes good use of these in comparing the texts. The candidate applies suitable theoretical models to the data. These are helpful, especially where she uses objective measurements to support her observations. The presentation of the analysis is especially helpful - it is very easy for the assessor to see what is going on. Occasionally the analysis may seem simple or descriptive, but it is mostly very clear. The study is technical yet free of jargon and irrelevance - it seems rather lean and hungry.

The candidate observes these mostly, but does not observe the academic protocol for references. Typography is particularly helpful to the reader. The appendices are thorough and those on readability especially informative.

This candidate occasionally lapses into description but is mostly highly focussed, and always objective. Although it is not at all elegant, this study is controlled, rigorous and coherent. It fulfils all the criteria in the highest band albeit unspectacularly, but clearly avoids the failings described in the next band (“scope” too large, “superficial”, “irrelevant” and “lack of open-mindedness”). For these reasons it is placed at the lower end of the band.

Student C

The primary data chosen for this investigation form a coherent sample, but may be too extensive for the investigator to study systematically within the available word-limit. The candidate's method is fairly sound, although the sequence of theoretical models used is not always clear, and she gives too much attention to secondary data (versions outside the King James tradition, which should perhaps have been used as reference points only). Presentation of the investigation, data and appendices is clear and helpful to the assessor.

The analysis of the data is rigorous, making appropriate use of semantic, etymological and lexical models. The length of the passage studied, and the range of translations makes [name] take a selective approach to the analysis, but her selection is thorough and representative.

The conclusions at which the candidate arrives are persuasive. The study has led to a clear understanding of language change.

This study is consistently rigorous and objective; most judgements are supported by interpretation of the evidence.

The candidate observes these mostly, although references are not complete. The presentation is clear and helpful to the assessor.

This candidate has chosen an interesting subject, which she has investigated intelligently. She arrives at clear conclusions. The investigation fulfils the criteria in the second mark band, near the lower end.

Student D

The primary data chosen for this investigation form a substantial, but coherent and manageable sample, and are suitable for the nature of the study. They are related to a scholarly range of secondary and comparative data. The task undertaken is challenging, although the candidate makes light of its difficulty. His method is sound, but the pacing of the task could have been better - some haste at the end, although this does not show overtly in the work submitted.

The extensive discussion of the cultural and historical function of taboo words may suggest that the analysis is less than thorough. However, the analysis is extensive and rigorous, especially that which appears in the Conclusion. Moreover, the impression of brevity is exaggerated by this candidate's succinctness. The quality of analysis is first-rate: objective interpretations are convincingly applied to the data, and supported by reference to wider language study. Perhaps the candidate could have made more use of the excellent appendices of objective data. Although the candidate is comfortable in applying the technical register of linguistic analysis, the investigation is pleasingly free of jargon, and easy to follow.

The conclusions at which the candidate arrives are clear, persuasive and significant. The study has led to interesting results. Rigour and Objectivity: This study is exemplary in both respects.

The candidate observes these exactly. Appendices are most interesting, especially the tables that record objective or statistical information from the texts studied. The bibliography is extensive, and the analysis of the data shows that it is no invention!

This candidate defies easy assessment according to the AQA criteria, as he has a wider perspective and theoretical understanding of the subject than many teachers. The facility with which he relates his reading of the data under scrutiny to a comprehensive range of examples is magisterial.

  • Use tables or graphical representations where this is helpful. Ensure that you record data objectively. Evaluation will be at least partly subjective, but should be informed by objective analysis.
  • Try to keep to your - make use of an appropriate register for language science. Avoid popular myths about language - do not characterize non-standard forms as or for example.
  • - this should show that you have found out something real and worth knowing. Try to avoid stating the obvious - you may also leave open the reasons for or causes of what you have found. Try to bring your conclusion back to statements you have found in (and quoted from) secondary sources - showing how far your research supports these or contradicts them. If your findings do not support the views of these authorities, it does not mean either is mistaken - it may be evidence of language change with time or place.
  • - observe conventions for writing a scientific report. Make sure all papers are clean and legible. Put your work in a suitable folder or binder, so it is easy for the examiner to assess. Make sure all appendices, letters of permission and original data sources (these may be audio or video recordings) are included, with dates, place of origin and other contextual information.

The English Patient – Michael Ondaatje

Haunting and harrowing, as beautiful as it is disturbing, The English Patient tells the story of the entanglement of four damaged lives in an Italian monastery as the second world war ends. The exhausted nurse, Hana; the maimed thief, Caravaggio; the wary sapper, Kip: each is haunted by the riddle of the English patient, the nameless, burn victim who lies in an upstairs room and whose memories of passion, betrayal and rescue illuminate this book like flashes of sheet lightning. In lyrical prose informed by a poetic consciousness, Michael Ondaatje weaves these characters together, pulls them tight, then unravels the threads with unsettling acumen.

Wide Sargasso Sea – Jean Rhys

Jean Rhys’s late, literary masterpiece Wide Sargasso Sea was inspired by Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and is set in the lush, beguiling landscape of Jamaica in the 1830s. Born into an oppressive, colonialist society, Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway meets a young Englishman who is drawn to her innocent sensuality and beauty. After their marriage the rumours begin, poisoning her husband against her. Caught between his demands and her own precarious sense of belonging, Antoinette is driven towards madness.

The French Lieutenants Woman – John Fowles

Haunted night and day by the face of ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ (Sarah Woodruff) Charles Smithson struggles to forget her and concede to a life with the entirely more conventional Ernestina Freeman. Theirs is the expected and typical Victorian pairing, but as the action progresses, Charles finds his initial curiosity towards the enigmatic Sarah developing into attraction and eventual desire. In his novel, Fowles powerfully depicts Charles’s inner conflict between head and heart, painfully illustrating the consequences of allowing the heart to overrule in such a repressed, hypocritical society.

All the Pretty Horses – Cormac McCarthy

This is an astonishing and spellbinding book, a triumph of writing and storytelling. The first sentence is sufficient to draw the reader into a journey from a father’s deathbed to the wild plains of the American West. But the time could be the present with its drab towns, unemployment and men either too intelligent or too stupid for the lives they are trapped in. The author can describe the American landscape with an honesty and lyricism that echoes the finest ancient literature. He does this in a unique style that sounds like the voice of a hardened cowboy who understands deeply his horses and his land.

Rebecca – Daphne Du Maurier

Rebecca is a timeless classic in the gothic literature genre. Daphne Du Maurier weaves a tale full of tension and suspense that grips the reader from the start and doesn’t let go.
Max de Winter brings his new bride to Manderley, the home he shared with his beautiful first wife Rebecca, before her untimely death widowed him. Rebecca’s presence still seems to permeate Manderley, haunting the new Mrs de Winter and sapping her confidence. The housekeeper Mrs Danvers who loved Rebecca and resents her place being ‘usurped’ feeds the young brides insecurities at every opportunity and makes her doubt her husbands love for her. When whispers of murder start to be heard, Mrs de Winter starts to doubt her new husband as well as her own sanity.

Oscar and Lucinda – Peter Carey

Oscar Hopkins is a high-strung preacher’s kid with hydrophobia and noisy knees. Lucinda Leplastrier is a frizzy-haired heiress who impulsively buys a glass factory with the inheritance forced on her by a well-intentioned adviser. In the early parts of this lushly written book, author Peter Carey renders the seminal turning points in his protagonists’ childhoods as exquisite 19th-century set pieces. Young Oscar, denied the heavenly fruit of a Christmas pudding by his cruelly stern father, forever renounces his father’s religion in favour of the Anglican Church. “Dear God,” Oscar prays, “if it be Thy will that Thy people eat pudding, smite him!” Lucinda’s childhood trauma involves a beautiful doll bought by her struggling mother with savings from the jam jar; in a misguided attempt to tame the doll’s unruly curls, young Lucinda mutilates her treasure beyond repair. Neither of these coming-of-age stories quite explains how the grown-up Oscar and Lucinda each develop a guilty passion for gambling. Oscar plays the horses while at school, and Lucinda, now an orphaned heiress, finds comfort in a game of cards with an odd collection of acquaintances. When the two finally meet, on board a ship bound for New South Wales, they are bound by their affinity for risk, their loneliness and their awkwardly blossoming (but unexpressed) mutual affection.

A Room with a View – E M Forster

A variety of English tourists are gathered in a small Italian pensione in Florence when Lucy and Charlotte arrive. Both women had asked for and been promised rooms with a view. Upon arrival, they got just the opposite. Complaining over dinner about this, two men, a father and his son, immediately offer to exchange rooms. This offer breaks most rules of good manners at the time, and the women turn down the kind, well-intentioned offer. Thus far can manners cause one to go against one’s best interests. During their time in Florence, the women find themselves confounded and redirected by the honest helpfulness of the Emerson men. But the familiarity raises dangerous challenges for Lucy, and she flees their company.

Where angels fear to tread – E M Forster

When attractive, impulsive English widow Lidia takes a holiday in Italy, she causes a scandal by marrying Gino, a dashing and highly unsuitable Italian twelve years her junior. Her prim, snobbish in-laws make no attempts to hide their disapproval, and when Lidia’s decision eventually brings disaster, her English relatives embark on an expedition to face the uncouth foreigner. But when they are confronted by the beauty of Italy and the charm and vitality of the disreputable Gino, they are forced to examine their own narrow lives, and their reactions are emotional, violent and unexpected.

 

 

 

 

Sons and Lovers – D H Lawrence

It is full of deep psychological insight and it helps if you have a smattering of the ideas of Freud and Jung. With these ideas it’s possible to decode just how damaging it is to a child, when the mother switches the love she had for her husband to the son. Add to the already explosive mix a drunken and physically abusive father then there is no escape for Paul (the Lawrence figure in this highly autobiographical story).

After such a brutal upbringing, there is surprisingly, a positive ending, where the young man chooses life over death. His relationships with Miriam and Clara have allowed him some normal development, although, in particular, with Miriam there is much grief as the mother sees her as a rival for Paul’s love.

 

 

 

Atonement – Ian McEwan

We meet 13-year-old Briony Tallis in the summer of 1935, as she attempts to stage a production of her new drama The Trials of Arabella to welcome home her elder, idolised brother Leon. But she soon discovers that her cousins, the glamorous Lola and the twin boys Jackson and Pierrot, aren’t up to the task, and directorial ambitions are abandoned as more interesting preoccupations come onto the scene. The charlady’s son Robbie Turner appears to be forcing Briony’s sister Cecilia to strip in the Fountain and sends her obscene letters; Leon has brought home a dim chocolate magnate keen for a war to promote his new “Army Amo” bar; and upstairs Briony’s migraine-stricken mother Emily keeps tabs on the house from her bed. Soon, secrets emerge that change the lives of everyone present…

The Fourth Hand – John Irving

Irving’s latest novel kicks off with an extraordinary incident. Sent to cover a colourful “human interest” story in a circus in Gujarat, its protagonist – a New York TV journalist – becomes the story himself when he is mauled by a lion which takes his hand off at the wrist. The whole grisly thing is caught on camera and shown around the world. But that’s not all. A viewer in Wisconsin is moved to “donate” her husband’s hand as a replacement, in some pioneering surgery, The only problem being that her husband is still very much alive and well… Irving’s book mixes satire, black comedy, sexual picaresque (the journalist in question is an inveterate womaniser) with something else again. The mysterious painkiller which he is given in India opens unexpected vistas in the mind of the unfortunate main character. It’s an inventive, funny, sexy book which also gets serious about love, loss and fate.

Remains of the Day – Kazuo Ishiguro

The novel’s narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession. In a career that spans the second world war, Stevens is oblivious of the real life that goes on around him–oblivious, for instance, of the fact that his aristocrat employer is a Nazi sympathizer. Still, there are even larger matters at stake in this heartbreaking, beautifully crafted novel– namely, Stevens’ own ability to allow some bit of life-affirming love into his tightly repressed existence.

 

 

 

 

My Antonia – Willa Cather

Burden, a successful and cultured East-coast lawyer, is returning to his childhood home in Blackhawk, Nebraska for a visit. On the long train ride, he reminisces with an unnamed friend about the place where they had both grown up and about the people they knew – especially their dear friend Antonia, “who seemed to mean to us the country, the conditions, the whole adventure of our childhood.”

When young Jim Burden was orphaned at age ten, he left his native Virginia to live with his grandparents on their farm, just outside of Blackhawk. At almost the same time that Jim arrived, the Shimerda family settled on their land. Mrs. Shimerda had argued effectively for a move to America so that the children, especially Ambrosch, the eldest son, would have the chance to make a better life for themselves, with more possibilities of moving up in the social hierarchy and of acquiring wealth. The Bohemian newcomers were the Burden’s closest neighbors. Fourteen year-old Antonia Shimerda, the eldest daughter became a close friend of Jim’s. He was immediately drawn to her warmth and friendliness. When Antonia’s father, a sensitive, refined man, discovered that Jim was educated he asked the boy to teach his daughter to speak English. “Te-e-ach, te-e-ach my Án-tonia!” he told/asked Mrs. Burden. Together the two young people worked the land and explored the glorious prairie. And Antonia began to learn English.

Women in Love – D H Lawrence

The book is insightful, superbly written and delves deep into the familiar Lawrence areas of sex, sexuality, love, social class, & materialism. It is also written before Lawrence became embittered with society, which shows in his later works.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin – Louis de Bernieres

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin is set in the early days of the second world war, before Benito Mussolini invaded Greece. Dr Iannis practices medicine on the island of Cephalonia, accompanied by his daughter, Pelagia, to whom he imparts much of his healing art. Even when the Italians do invade, life isn’t so bad–at first anyway. The officer in command of the Italian garrison is the cultured Captain Antonio Corelli, who responds to a Nazi greeting of “Heil Hitler” with his own “Heil Puccini”, and whose most precious possession is his mandolin. It isn’t long before Corelli and Pelagia are involved in a heated affair–despite her engagement to a young fisherman, Mandras, who has gone off to join Greek partisans. Love is complicated enough in wartime, even when the lovers are on the same side. And for Corelli and Pelagia, it becomes increasingly difficult to negotiate the minefield of allegiances, both personal and political, as all around them atrocities mount, former friends become enemies and the ugliness of war infects everyone it touches.

 

 

Portrait of a Marriage – Nigel Nicholson

The marriage was that between the two writers, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson and the portrait is drawn partly by Vita herself in an autobiography which she left behind at her death in 1962 and partly by her son, Nigel. It was one of the happiest and strangest marriages there has ever been. Both Vita and Harold were always in love with other people and each gave the other full liberty without enquiry or reproach’, knowing that their love for each other would be unaffected and even strengthened by the crises which it survived. This account of their love story is now a modern classic.

Birdsong – Sebastian Faulks

The book’s hero, a 20-year-old Englishman named Stephen Wraysford, finds his true love on a trip to Amiens in 1910. Unfortunately, she’s already married, the wife of a wealthy textile baron. Wrayford convinces her to leave a life of passionless comfort to be at his side, but things do not turn out according to plan. Wraysford is haunted by this doomed affair and carries it with him into the trenches of the war. Birdsong derives most of its power from its descriptions of mud and blood, and Wraysford’s attempt to retain a scrap of humanity while surrounded by it. There is a simultaneous description of his present-day granddaughter’s quest to read his diaries, which is designed to give some sense of perspective; this device is only somewhat successful. Nevertheless, Birdsong is a rewarding read, an unflinching war story and a touching romance.

The Crimson Petal and the White – Michel Faber

Michel Faber’s loose, baggy monster of a book captures the great narrative drive of classic Victorian storytellers, and wears its influences fairly openly. Sugar, the heroine, has an instinct for self-preservation as intuitive as Vanity Fair’s Becky Sharp. The densely researched details of perfume manufacturing recall George Eliot’s quarrying for “Middlemarch”. And the frank sexual content will probably have Andrew Davies rubbing his hands with glee if he gets the chance to adapt it for the screen, as he’s done with Sarah Waters’ “Tipping the Velvet”.

 

 

 

 

Cloud Atlas – David Mitchell

Structured rather akin to a Chinese puzzle or a set of Matrioshka dolls, there are dazzling shifts in genre and voice and the stories leak into each other with incidents and people being passed on like batons in a relay race. The 19th-century journals of an American notary in the Pacific that open the novel are subsequently unearthed 80 years later on by Frobisher in the library of the ageing, syphilitic maestro he’s trying to fleece. Frobisher’s waspish letters to his old Cambridge crony, Rufus Sexsmith, in turn surface when Rufus, (by the 1970s a leading nuclear scientist) is murdered. A novelistic account of the journalist Luisa Rey’s investigation into Rufus’ death finds its way to Timothy Cavendish, a London vanity publisher with an author who has an ingenious method of silencing a snide reviewer. And in a near-dystopian Blade Runner-esque future, a genetically engineered fast food waitress sees a movie based on Cavendish’s unfortunate internment in a Hull retirement home.

 

 

Cold Mountain – Charles Frazier

Charles Frazier’s debut novel, Cold Mountain, is the story of a very long walk. In the waning months of the Civil War, a wounded Confederate veteran named Inman gets up from his hospital bed and begins the long journey back to his home in the remote hills of North Carolina. Along the way he meets rogues and outlaws, Good Samaritans and vigilantes, people who help and others who hinder, but through it all Inman’s aim is true: his one goal is to return to Cold Mountain and to Ada, the woman he left behind. The object of his affection, meanwhile, has problems of her own. Raised in the rarified air of Charleston society, Ada was brought to the backwoods of Cold Mountain by her father, a preacher who came to the country for his health. Even after her father’s death, Ada remains there, partly to wait for Inman, but partly because she senses her destiny lies not in the city but in the North Carolina Blue Ridge.

The Time Traveller’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger

The Time Traveler’s Wife tells the intruiging story of Clare and Henry, who meet when Claire is 6 and Henry is 36 but marry when Claire is 20 and Henry 28. It describes in dramatic detail, their unusual meeting, and their lives together and not. Their story is full of up and downs – Clare can never be sure when Henry will disappear next, where to, or when he will come back. This adds a certain fleetingness and intensity to their relationship, particularily the earlier parts. As the book continues, it adds more flesh and detail to the two central characters; their friends, family, and relationships before and after they met each other. This ensures that the characters are well developed and described – not just reflections of each other.

The Age of Innocence – Edith Wharton

Widely regarded as one of Edith Wharton’s greatest achievements, The Age of Innocence is not only subtly satirical, but also a sometimes dark and disturbing comedy of manners in its exploration of the ‘eternal triangle’ of love. Set against the backdrop of upper-class New York society during the 1870s, the author’s combination of powerful prose combined with a thoroughly researched and meticulous evocation of the manners and style of the period, has delighted readers since the novel’s first publication in 1920. In 1921 The Age of Innocence achieved a double distinction – it won the Pulitzer Prize and it was the first time this prestigious award had been won by a woman author.

Never Let Me Go – Kazuo Ishiguro

Beloved – Toni Morrison

Beloved may well be the defining novel of slavery in America, the one that all others will be measured by.

A Thousand Splendid Suns – Khaled Hosseini

Any Human Heart – William Boyd (He’s an OG!)

Logan Gonzago Mountstuart, writer, was born in 1906, and died of a heart attack on October 5, 1991, aged 85. Any Human Heart is his disjointed autobiography, a massive tome chronicling “my personal rollercoaster”–or rather, “not so much a rollercoaster”, but a yo-yo, “a jerking spinning toy in the hands of a maladroit child”. From his early childhood in Montevideo, son of an English corned beef executive and his Uraguayan secretary, through his years at a Norfolk public school and Oxford, Mountstuart traces his haphazard development as a writer. Early and easy success is succeeded by a long half-century of mediocrity, disappointments and setbacks, both personal and professional, leading him to multiple failed marriages, internment, alcoholism and abject poverty.

Strange Meeting – Susan Hill

John Hilliard, a young subaltern returning to the Western Front after a brief period of sick leave back in England, finds his battalion tragically altered. His commanding officer finds escape in alcohol, there is a new adjutant and even Hilliard’s batman has been killed. But there is David Barton. As yet untouched and unsullied by war, radiating charm and common sense, forever writing long letters to his family. Theirs is a strange meeting and a strange relationship: the coming together of opposites in the summer lull before the inevitable storm.

Regeneration – Pat Barker

Enduring Love – Ian McEwan

In itself, the accident would change the couple and the survivors’ lives, filling them with an uneasy combination of shame, happiness, and endless self-reproach. But fate has far more unpleasant things in store for Joe. Meeting the eye of fellow rescuer Jed Parry, for example, turns out to be a very bad move. For Jed is instantly obsessed, making the first of many calls to Joe and Clarissa’s London flat that very night. Soon he’s openly shadowing Joe and writing him endless letters. (One insane epistle begins, “I feel happiness running through me like an electrical current. I close my eyes and see you as you were last night in the rain, across the road from me, with the unspoken love between us as strong as steel cable.”) Worst of all, Jed’s version of love comes to seem a distortion of Joe’s feelings for Clarissa.

1984 – George Orwell

White Teeth – Zadie Smith

The story travels through Jamaica, Turkey, Bangladesh and India but ends up in a scrubby North London borough, home of the book’s two unlikely heroes: prevaricating Archie Jones and intemperate Samad Iqbal. They met in the Second World War, as part of a “Buggered Battalion” and have been best friends ever since. Archie marries beautiful, buck-toothed Clara, who’s on the run from her Jehovah’s Witness mother, and they have a daughter, Irie. Samad marries stroppy Alsana and they have twin sons: “Children with first and last names on a direct collision course. Names that secrete within them mass exodus, cramped boats and planes, cold arrivals, medical checks.”

Small Island – Andrea Levy

The ‘today’ of the novel is 1948, when Queenie Bligh has given up waiting for her husband Bernard to come back from his service in the Second World War, and to make ends meet has let rooms in her house out to immigrants from Jamaica, among them Gilbert Joseph and his wife Hortense. And that is Small Island in a sentence. But it takes us back through the four main characters’ lives before and during the war, each speaking to us in their own voice. The ventriloquism is elegant and brilliantly managed, making us sympathetic to all the characters in turn, and gripped by their flowingly told stories; so much so that when they come into conflict at the end of the novel, we are as torn as they are, and don’t know which way to turn.

Brave New World  – Aldous Huxley

This is a vision of the future where the population is controlled by subtlety and manipulation, the basic premise being that if people are too doped up to realise that they have been conned by a tiny minority who have everything then that elite can remain in charge for ever.

In Huxley’s world the method of control is to program people to indulge only their most transitory and materialistic desires all of which can be fulfilled quite readily and in doing so suppress any idea that there “might be more to life than this” and this leaves the population with happy but trivial lives.

The morality of this is questioned through the introduction of an outsider to the society and his actions form the basis of the plot. To be honest I think the story isn’t as involving as the world it is set in but the questions the book raised easily merit this book classic status.

Brideshead Revisited – Evelyn Waugh

When the novel opens at the end of World War II, Capt. Charles Ryder and his troops, looking for a billet, have just arrived at Brideshead, the now-dilapidated family castle belonging to Lord Marchmain, a place where Charles Ryder stayed for an extended period just after World War I, the home of his best friend from Oxford, Lord Sebastian Flyte. The story of his relationship with Sebastian, a man who has rejected the Catholicism imposed on him by his devout mother, occupies the first part of the book. Sebastian, an odd person who carries his teddy bear Aloysius everywhere he goes, tries to escape his upbringing and religious obligations through alcohol. Charles feels responsible for Sebastian’s welfare, and though there is no mention of any homosexual relationship, Charles does say that it is this relationship which first teaches him about the depths of love.

 

 

Lady Chatterley’s Lover – D H Lawrence

Perhaps the most famous of Lawrence’s novels, the 1928 Lady Chatterley’s Lover is no longer distinguished for the once shockingly explicit treatment of its subject matter–the adulterous affair between a sexually unfulfilled upper-class married woman and the gamekeeper who works for the estate owned by her husband. Now that we’re used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it’s apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, Lawrence’s masterful and lyrical writing, and a story that takes us bodily into the world of its characters.

Decline and Fall – Evelyn Waugh

Sent down from Oxford in outrageous circumstances, Paul Pennyfeather is oddly surprised to find himself qualifying for the position of schoolmaster at Llanabba Castle. His colleagues are an assortment of misfits, rascals and fools, including Prendy (plagued by doubts) and Captain Grimes, who is always in the soup (or just plain drunk). Then Sports Day arrives, and with it the delectable Margot Beste-Chetwynde, floating on a scented breeze. As the farce unfolds and the young run riot, no one is safe, least of all Paul.
